NEW FLOCKS

On establishing a registered flock and applying to join the Association, prospective members must complete an Application Form with details of the stock purchased. At the same time, the Annual Subscription, an Entrance Fee and a Prefix Registration Fee are payable together with a Transfer Fee for each registered female purchased. There is no transfer fee for rams. Prospective members are strongly advised to ensure that their foundation females have been or, in the case of lambs, will be registered with the Association and are correctly ear marked.

ANNUAL RETURNS

Every October the Association sends the necessary forms for the registration of the year's crop of ewe lambs, the registration of any new stock rams added during the year, and the transfer of any registered ewes purchased during the year. An Annual Return Form is also sent at this time, which covers the subscription, registration and transfer fees, and census of stock numbers. For inclusion in the year's Flock Book, returns must be received by the Secretary by 30th November. Returns received after this date are subject to a surcharge and the registrations may be deferred to the following Flock Book.

RAM & EWE REGISTRATIONS

Only the progeny of fully registered parents may be registered as pedigree. Ewe lambs which are being retained or sold for pedigree breeding must be registered by the breeder (the owner of the dam at the date of birth) in November. To encourage the registration of ewe lambs in the year of birth, a higher registration fee is payable on shearlings and older ewes not previously registered. Rams are registered by the owner using a signed Ram Registration Form from the breeder. Breeders must not sign a Ram Registration Form for a sheep known to be a rig.

When registering a ewe lamb, the Association allocates a six-digit Registered Number and issues a Pedigree Certificate. Ewes are not given registered names in the Flock Book and names should not be used in show and sale entry descriptions. Rams, however, are named, the name preceded by the Registered Prefix of the breeder (i.e. the owner of the dam at the date of birth). On registration, the Association gives the ram a five-digit Registered Number that is shown in brackets after the name e.g. Saxon Valiant (18081) and issues a Pedigree Certificate.

EARMARKING

OFFICIAL UK ID
Lambs intended for breeding must be identified with two official UK ear tags bearing the same number. The tags must be applied within 9 months of birth or when the lambs first move from the holding on which they were born, whichever is first. Tags must not be coloured red. The information that appears on the two official UK tags must be identical, unique to the animal and will consist of:

UK + flock mark of birth + unique individual number
(e.g. UK123456-789 in England & Wales or UK123456-000789 in Scotland)

OXFORD DOWN SBA EAR MARK
The Association requires that all lambs born in registered Oxford Down flocks must be ear marked as soon as practicable after birth with the ODSBA ear mark. This must not interfere with the official UK ID and will consist of:

ODSBA Flock Number + Index Letter + Individual Lamb Number
(written in pedigrees in format 1234-K1 for first lamb born in 2008 in Flock No. 1234)

EAR MARKING METHODS
Triple tagging
If small metal or plastic loop tags tags are used, two tags can be inserted for the official UK ID and a third tag used for the ODSBA ear mark.
Double tagging
If two-piece plastic button or flag tags are used, the official UK ID can be printed on one side of the tag and the ODSBA ear mark on the other.
Tattooing and notching
This can be used for the ODSBA ear mark (see Flock Book for details) along with two tags for the official UK ID.

RECORD KEEPING
The details of both the UK and ODSBA ear marks must be recorded for each lamb alongside the sire and dam information in the breeder's lambing book.
